Task 2a My Reflective Journal

Task 2a My Reflective Journal

From a young age I have been encouraged to keep a journal to express my thoughts and feelings and traditionally almost always receive a new one for christmas. I will admit in most cases over the years it was more like a diary however in this case I am now able to focus on a specific subject (dance). I read Reader 2 and the chapter 'Using journal writing to enhance professional practice' by Boud, this helped me to understand what I could draw out of the experiences I was writing about.

As I am on the go quite a lot I also use the notes app on my phone to jot down any ideas or thoughts I have when I’m out and about. I also have a notebook which I use to record ideas usually after or even during a Skype session. Afterwards I then transfer all of this into my journal to keep everything in one place. I have found when typing on my phone my entry is much less personal and I wonder whether it is due to the fact I am on the go so can not give my full attention to the task at hand or As Boud states ''The expectation of writing for an external audience can profoundly shape what we write and what we allow ourselves to consider'' (Boud, 2001, p 15)

Boud also said “Journal writing can be viewed through many different lenses: as a form of self-expression, as a record of event or a form of therapy.” (Boud, David 2001 p9). I took this quote to heart and began gathering my thoughts and questioning myself on a variety of issues. In addition, it reminded me that I could also use my journal writing as a record of event. I found this most beneficial as I can record before and after each audition. To avoid making the same mistakes I now evaluate each audition. For example, my choice of variation was good and showcased my skills however my pirouettes were a little uneasy due to feeling tense/nervous.
Recording a journal afterwards reminds me what went well, what I should avoid doing next time, how I can improve, it gives me clear direction and helps me avoid making the same mistakes at the next audition. This is something I will continue to do throughout my career as I can delve deeper into reflecting on a daily basis.
