Module One Skype Session
Firstly we spoke about citations which for myself was perhaps the most beneficial as I am now aware of the correct way to display them in the bibliography. For example websites need to include the dates accessed and when referring to an author or theory in the text you must cite what you are talking about for example instead of simply writing 'McDonald said it was not beneficial' you need to state 'McDonald (1998) said it was not beneficial'. This way the reader is informed where and when it was said and can then go to the bibliography at the end and continue further reading / research if they wish to do so.
It is important to inform the reader of your professional practice. Adesola gave the example during the Skype Call that if you are a Dance Teacher who teaches young children then Social Media may not have a significant impact on your career as you have to be careful with what you share online when it comes to minors. However if you simply state that you do not think social media will benefit your profession as you have to be careful when it comes to young children the reader will think what does it matter about young children this is about you. As the reader will be unaware of your profession, this leads to confusion and does not give context to your discussion.
Another important factor that I learnt was not to rely too heavily on the appendices as many people will not actually click on each appendix and continue to read. A useful tip Adesola gave was to read your essay with no appendices and ensure it makes sense. The appendices should be thought of as additional information / supporting evidence to back up your critical reflection.
Concluding today's Skype Session. I now feel much more comfortable with the 'extra' bits of the essay if you will. I feel as though I have tied up all the loose ends, am aware of the changes I need to make and have a clear understanding as to how to present my citations and appendices.
